On our way from San Antonio to Austin we drove through Lockhart, 'The BBQ capital of Texas' which kind of makes it the BBQ capital of the world (according to the Lonely Planet). We were driving through around lunchtime so decided to stop and have a bite to eat. We only had to choose between the several that were available. We went for Kreuz, as it seemed to be one of the best.
We waked in and it was a long corridor to the 'hot room' where all the smoking and cooking is done. we ordered a few slices of beef brisket ($11.90 per lb) and a cheeky sausage ($1.80). Some bread was added, it was wrapped in a bag and we went to the eating area.
In the eating area, you get to choose some sides and drinks if required. Maria wanted a pickle (80c) and Anthony was desperate to try some of the beans ($1.49) so we added those to our order. The meat was perfectly cooked. you could tear it with your fingers and it was incredibly tasty and juicy considering there was no sauce. Kreuz is one of the only BBQ places in Lockhart where they do not have the meat dripping in sauce. (and they get quite unhappy if you ask for it)
The sausage was also really good. Quite spicy but really flavoursome.
The beans were excellent. (THEY HAD BRISKET MEAT IN THEM!!!) They really added to the smokyness of the meat and sausage and were great to dip your sandwich into.
All in all, a really good lunch from the best BBQ around. can't wait to see what else we find deep in the heart of Texas.
