Imereti - Off Fountain Square

Imeretti is again, one of those places, that we have been to a couple of times but have never reviewed. So when we went for lunch this week we decided to write a quick review.

There are a couple of good things about going to Imereti, one of the best Georgian (the one not in America) restaurants in Baku; Pork and Khachapuri. The dish above was Ojakhury, pork and potatoes (9AZN) The pork was dry and definitely overcooked, but the little crispy potatoes, with an amazing after kick of garlic were extreamly satisfying.

Imereti was the first taste of Khachapuri we had before we went to Tbilisi last year, and although it doesn't quite match up to all the amazing breads we found in Georgia, it's still a decent representation of what the food was like.

The Khachapuri (8AZN) was soft, not too greasy and full to the brim of cheese. It was well cooked, and bearing in mind that we were sharing, it seemed to fill us up very quickly.

We have had the Khinkali from Imereti before and were disappointed, so this time we tried a different dish called Chebureki (3AZN). It was a kind of deep fried khinkali pastry filled with meat. The meat was incredibly juicy and tender, the pastry was crisp and sealed the flavour inside. It worked especially well with spicy tomato sauce that accompanied the meal.

Finally lets talk about the salads. We like trying a Mimosa salad from anywhere we go so we ordered one of those, and a traditional Georgian green salad. (both 7AZN)

The Mimosa salad was very creamy, and full of mayonnaise, and the layers of chicken, potato and carrot were well defined. However, the Mimosa from Nargiz and Araz are far superior. The Georgian salad wasn't the best Georgian salad but it was freshly made.

As for the service. When we arrived at 2pm there was at least one waiter asleep and the other playing on his phone. It took them a while to realise we wanted a table but once we had sat down our waiter was more than attentive and spoke very good English. The other was still fast asleep well into our meal.

For the most part, spending nearly 30AZN on a lunch time treat is quite substantial with all the 'business lunches' out there. We know that many of our friends enjoy visiting Imereti, but when we think about the best bits of Gerogia, and what we really enjoyed during our time there, we are not sure that it meets those expectations anymore.
