On a lazy sunday morning - Anthony's mobile bleeps;
"We're going to the 'Green Market' if you guys wanna come with us"
"Of course," we say! And the next thing you know, Dan (Dan the ipad man) and Iryna are taking us on a journey (bus, metro and a walk) to find the 'Green Market'.
(Anthony was unsure if it was called green due to the fact it sold vegetables or if it was surrounded by a huge green wall!)
We walked in and were met with all of the sights, sounds and smells of a bustling market. Fruit was sold out of car boots and lorries, whilst some merchants were taking the time to stack their produce (by size) in a neat little tower.
As we wandered around, we found the most amazing looking apples, score one for us. We had been told that haggling is a way of life for Azerbaijanis. Thank goodness we had (the Russian speaking) Dan on our side to negotiate a good deal!
As we turned the corner we were met with a massive building full of people selling their goods - vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese, dried fruit, nuts.
We took a long slow walk around, relying on Dan to help us with our purchases. Finally we bit the bullet and attempted to buy something ourselves. We wanted a handful of onions. 3KG for 1AZN later we decided we need to learn some Azeri ASAP!
Dan and Iryna were being very fussy about which Watermelon they were taking home, and it worked out well. 1.50AZN for what looked like an excellent find.
Maria spent what felt like an age in the Butternut Squash room to find her perfect one. But after being quoted 5AZN for it (We got one at our local supermarket for 1.71AZN) we said 'нет' and walked away...
A fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon and now we have to think about what to cook with all our ingredients. Next weekend, we will be heading to another local market and hopefully we will find the ingredients to make a fresh pasta ravioli for Dan and Iryna!
