Chinar - Baku

This is now our fourth time at Chinar so we thought we better blog about it. We usually try and get there for lunch as it is very quiet and they do a relatively inexpensive business lunch menu.

The business lunch starts at 15AZN for main and dessert, 18AZN for starter and main and 25AZN for all three. We opted for a starter and main consisting of a kingfish salad and chicken in a Tonkatsu curry sauce. We also added a duck curry for good measure.

First, let me tell you about our experience with water. It is very expensive as they never seem to have the cheaper ones in stock. We once paid 10AZN for a bottle of Evian! Luckily this time around we asked for a drinks menu and managed to get a cheaper bottle of water, Sarab (not on the menu) - 3.50AZN for 500ml.

The kingfish salad was very fishy and quite sour, we expect they had used a citrus fruit for the dressing and rather than being refreshing, it made your eyes water. The salad was fresh though and the lettuce had a good crunch. Having said that, it is not something either of us would order again. Another starter that we tried last time was the sticky chilcken wings, and again, not something we would order twice. This is starting to make the business lunch not so cost effective.

Next up was our duck curry. (15AZN) This was a very good dish, full of complex spicy flavours. The runny egg was cooked to perfection and there were little hidden gems in the form of crispy potatoes that had been added right at the last minute so they didn't lost their crunch. All in all a very successful dish that both the wife and I polished off in record time.We were concerned that this dish wold not be as good as the lamb Massaman curry that we have had before and really enjoyed, but were both very happy with our choice.

Finally we had chicken in Tonkatsu sauce. We have had this before back in August and had very fond memories of the spicy sauce and texture of the chicken, which is why we ordered it again. This time however we felt that it was a little flavourless after the spicy duck curry we had just eaten, and the chicken was only just cooked through.

We have had dimsum in the past, however it was consumed alongside rather a lot of alcohol and I cannot honestly tell you if it was any good. I do remember four of us having to spend a minimum 150AZN to get a table, which was easily achieved after a couple of drinks and a few shared plates of food.

Will we be going back to Chinar again? Yes, most definitely - perhaps even again this week! And as the weather gets colder, I have a feeling that Chinar's takeaway curries will ward off the chilly Baku winter.
