Vapiano is a chain of restaurants and has opened (relatively) recently in Baku. We've been a couple of times now and the food has been good on both occasions. Service, however, was unpredictable.
Let me set the record straight now.
Number 1 - Maria and I only ordered Pizzas. (of course)
Number 2 - the bad service hasn't happened to us.
We decided on Vapiano as our first place to eat out with little penguin as we knew it was going to be easy, and the non-smoking section is hard to find in other restaurants. We went during a week day during the Novrus break, were able to park upstairs and felt like very successful parents, venturing out with such a small baby.
Vapiano is an easy place for an Expat to go. There is lots of English menus and staff members speak enough English for you to place your order, and the payment system is easy as pie as long as you know what you are doing. On the table you will find Olive Oil and Balsamic vinegar, and, if you look around for it, chilli oil.
Maria ordered a Tropicale, Hawaiian style pizza (11AZN ish), lovely torn pieces of (pork!) ham with slices of pineapple on top. The base was crispy and the edges very tasty.
Anthony's pizza was far more unhealthy, Proscuitto e funghi, with, funnily enough, proscuitto and mushrooms. (12AZN ish) Again the base was great, it kept it's form so you could eat it with your hands.
Anthony ordered a coffee, It was Illy which was nice to find and seemed like it was made nicely. Do not order a soft drink like Coca cola! I'm warning you now, they are roughly the price of a flight to London!
Service problems -
We didn't find any as we went when it was relatively quiet. However, when we went after school one day for a friend's birthday, and there were 15 or so of us, they buckled under the pressure. Food orders taken and not delivered, lost orders, overcharging for food and drinks, the same drinks charged on different peoples tabs. All very annoying but fixable.
Food problems -
Some people have written on forums about live insects in their salads. We've never eaten a salad there, but our thinking is - at least it was alive and not frozen!
All in all a good meal there. We will return again and again as it is easy with a pleasant atmosphere and no one seemed to mind that we had a small child with us. Also the live wall in the restaurant is always nice to look at.
