Korchma - Ukrainian in the heart of Baku

First of all, although this may be the first time we are writing about Korchma, it is by far not the first time we have visited. This little gem of a place has been drawing us into it's potato filled basement from the first time we were introduced. We have never had a bad meal here, and after countless times of going, as well as taking any and all guests that have visited us, it is time to tell the world how great they are.

So, lets start with the facts. We didn't find this place by ourselves. We have the help of our very good friends. We have however, nearly always ordered the same things when we go. This is not because we do not know the menu, or are frightened of change, but because we have found a perfect combination of dishes to make it an evening to remember every time.

The first thing to order, Herring chaser for vodka. (good even without the vodka) This little dish is made of little pieces of herring, raw onion and a lot of butter. Oh, and potatoes, probably cooked in butter. Delicious.

Next, cabbage rolls in a rich sauce. These are stuffed with a variety of herbs and rich, perfectly cooked lamb. Soft and succulent, juicy and delicious.

Finally comes the star of the meal, potatoes. As you can see above. They come in all shapes and sizes, fried, baked, stuffed, you name it. They are always delicious, and you can never order too many of them. Make sure you also get a healthy supply of cmetana with them.

This is usually as far as we get. I ordered the Hunter style pork once (around 15AZN), a pork chop with cream, cheese and ham on top of it served with chips. So delicious I ordered it again when I returned. I am afraid I do not have all the prices etc for you, all I can tell you is that it is cheap and well worth the value.
